Liberal Democrat: Governor, Senators Like Al Qaeda For Helping Small Businesses
SANTA FE – This afternoon, liberal Democrat Senator Cisco McSorley took to the Senate floor to rail against a proposal that would shore up the state’s unemployment insurance fund without raising taxes on New Mexico businesses. Apparently opposed to supporting New Mexico’s businesses by avoiding tax increases during a fragile economy, Sen. McSorley ludicrously said that the proposed legislation was something Al Qaeda would support:
“There are banks in the world that do loans for no interest. You know what kind of banks they are? You know what kind of law they go by? Sharia law. This is the Sharia law bill of the special session. We’re going to transfer, not borrow, money and there’s not going to be any interest. You know, Al Qaeda…this is the Al Qaeda bill of the session. They love it,” said McSorley.
“Senator McSorley’s accusation that the unemployment insurance fund fix proposed by Governor Martinez and Republican and Democratic Senators is something Al Qaeda would support is beyond absurd. Comparing the Governor’s pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda to a group of radical mass murderers is beyond the pale,” said Republican Party of New Mexico executive director Bryan Watkins. “The Governor and her fellow Republicans are working hard to support New Mexico’s businesses and workers by ensuring the health of the unemployment fund without raising taxes. Any comparison between the Governor’s pro-growth agenda and Al Qaeda terrorists is offensive to those who have suffered at the hands of radical terrorists and the men and women in uniform who have dedicated their lives to keeping our country safe."
“Sen. McSorley has embarrassed himself, the Democratic party, and his fellow Democratic legislators. Even worse, he has humiliated his constituents who trusted him to serve with honor and dignity. Unless Democrats endorse this kind of reckless language, Democratic Chairman Javier Gonzales and Sen. McSorley’s legislative colleagues should denounce his rhetoric and demand an apology for his behavior.”
“It’s revealing that Democrats in the legislature are so anti-business that they would equate this common-sense measure, endorsed by the Albuquerque Journal, to terrorism. New Mexicans need real solutions like those proposed by Governor Martinez and her Republican colleagues, but Democrats have nothing to offer but wild accusations and tax hikes on job creators,” concluded Watkins.

Background:
The Albuquerque Journal endorsed the unemployment insurance fund fix proposed by Governor Martinez and sponsored by Sen. Steven Neville (R-Aztec) in an editorial this morning:
“Neville’s legislation, would keep the fund solvent for the next two years through a no-interest loan of up to $70 million from the state’s general fund. The money would be returned in five yearly installments.
“Shoring up the fund in this manner would leave current unemployment tax rates on businesses in place and avoid a job-killing increase…”
“Raising taxes now would be a stimulus plan in reverse.” (“Best Fix for Jobless Fund Spares Jobs,” Albuquerque Journal Editorial, 9/23/11)
