What's new?
On behalf of the UTS Law Students' Society (LSS), welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your break and are refreshed and ready to take full advantage of the opportunities we have in store for you in the year ahead.
Upon returning to UTS, you may have noticed a few changes. Block B in the Law Building has been completely refurbished, including an improved Law Courtyard and a range of new social and educational spaces. A refurbished Block A will also be open to students on 21 March 2011. More importantly, however, is the range of new initiatives that we have on offer to our members this year.
Throughout the summer, the LSS Council worked very hard to deliver some great new initiatives for law students at UTS. We are pleased to announce the introduction of the following new initiatives in 2011: a textbook loan program, subject tutoring program, Mallesons Professional Mentoring Program, Careers Networking Evening and Speaker Series. There will be more new programs unveiled throughout the year, however they are still being finalised at this point.
Of course, we will be delivering some of your old favourites as well. First Year Law Drinks, Pub Crawl, Law Cruise, Law Ball, Clerkship Networking Evening, Perspectives on Law Dinner, ALSA, Law Revue and the Intervarsity Sports Day will all be back, among a wide range of other activities.

Seminar: How to gain work experience whilst studying
Although the details of this seminar have not yet been finalised, the Law Students' Society will be holding a seminar to inform students of the best approaches to gain work experience, both legal and non-legal, during their studies. The presenters will outline a range of opportunities for involvement, both inside and outside of UTS, to build your CV and gain part-time employment, both paid and unpaid. Guest speakers will be arranged to present at the seminar and the LSS will be liaising with the Careers Service to determine the most relevant content for the presentation. As soon as the details for this event have been finalised, we will promote it through our website, Facebook, Twitter and, of course, The Buzz.

Volunteer as a witness or client
Competitions run by the UTS LSS are a fantastic way to compliment your academic learning with practical experience. Although registration has now closed for the Senior Mooting, Witness Examination, Client Interviewing, Negotiation and Paper Presentation competitions, we are always looking for volunteers for our competitions.
For Senior Witness Examination, we require people to act in a scripted role as witnesses. For Client Interviewing, students are required to act as a client engaging solicitors at first instance and will be provided with an outline of general facts, as well as secret facts that can only be disclosed if directly asked by the interviewer. Being involved as a witness or client is a fantastic way to ease yourself into these competitions and learn tips and tricks from older students with a large degree of experience. To register as a volunteer or for more information, please contact Amy Simpson (Witness Examation) at witex@utslss.com or Qin Bi (Client Interviewing) at ci@utslss.com.

External Competitions
This year, the Law Students' Society will be continually updating its website to inform students of external legal competitions not run, administered or organised by us or the Faculty of Law. These are generally essay competitions, however other competitions do come up throughout the year, including speaking competitions. To view the competitions currently displayed on our website, please click here.
Intervarsity Mooting Competitions
Each academic year, UTS enters students in a number of prestigious intervarsity moots. These moots are not only a great opportunity to travel, but to equip yourself with in-depth knowledge of new areas of law and, in some instances, claim course credit for your degree. Participation in these competitions is highly regarded by potential employers and can often offer the opportunity for students to travel interstate and internationally. For more information in relation to these competitions, please click here.

Subject Tutoring
The Law Students' Society has begun a Subject Tutoring database, where high performing law undergraduates can register to tutor our law undergraduates.
If you are interested in finding a tutor for one of your subjects this semester, or would like to find out more about how you can be a subject tutor, please click here.
Speaker Series: Reflections on Justice - 17 March
Next week, on Thursday 17 March, the UTS Law Students' Society will host the first ever Speaker Series event. The Speaker Series is a two-part event that runs once in each semester. The purpose of the event is to provide an academic forum in which distinguished guests share their views and thoughts on a given area of legal interest.
This Thursday, 17 March, we will be welcoming Sir Gerard Brennan AC KBE QC, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, Julian Burnside QC and Christine Adamson SC on-campus to reflect on the state of justice in the Australian legal system. Our launch of the initiative has created a stir within the UTS:Law community and we are pleased to announce that we have reached a full capacity of 250 attendees on the night.
We will be providing free drinks and a selection of canapés both before and after the panel discussion, where students will have the opportunity to meet our distinguished guest speakers, as well as representatives from various mid and top tier commercial law firms.
For those of you that missed out this semester, you can take comfort in the fact that we will be holding a second Speaker Series Event in Spring Semester.

Peer Mentoring Program
Peer Mentoring is one of four existing mentoring initiatives that exist within the UTS:Law community. Thus far in 2011, the program has been a complete success for our Autumn semester, with 26 highly skilled, senior mentors who have volunteered their time to teach six classes for one hour each week.
You might ask, well what's in it for me? The LSS and Law faculty are glad to say - quite a lot! The content has been completely revised and now includes a Supplementary Handbook for all our Mentees. There is a pre-release of content for each Mentee to bring to class, and a completely revised Handbook for all Mentors to teach the program to ensure it is presented in a consistent and fair manner.
The tips involve ways to manage your academic timetable, your study load, how best to format and create study notes, what is expected of you in the final exams and assessments, as well as tips on the first lessons of legalese and statutory interpretation.
Best of all, the prorgam is an opportunity to meet like-minded people, make friends and may even help you create your first study group. The weekly lessons are tailored by your lecturers, and fellow students, so that what you are taught is directly relevant to your first year subjects.
If you are interested in the Peer Mentoring program as a first year student beginning law, or as a senior student interested in giving back by involvement as a mentor in the Peer Mentoring Program, have a look at the Peer Mentoring Page on our website by clicking here. Alternatively, you can email the Education Director of the Law Students' Society, Skye Theodorou at ed@utslss.com.
Mallesons Professional Mentoring Program
In 2011, the UTS Law Students' Society (‘LSS') will be running a Professional Mentoring Program with Mallesons Stephen Jaques (Mallesons).
The Mallesons Professional Mentoring Program will see high-achieving 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students studying a double degree, and 1st or 2nd year JD/straight LLB students who are considering a career in commercial law, partnered with a solicitor from Mallesons. Solicitors will be matched with students on the basis of shared interests and experiences, and will serve as a mentor to the student for the duration of 2011.
The mentoring relationship will see the mentor provide friendly guidance and advice to the mentee, so that the mentee can gain first-hand insight into the world of commercial law. The mentor can further serve as a valuable resource in providing interview tips, advice in relation to the mentee's curriculum vitae, and other miscellaneous advice that only a practicing solicitor can provide.
The Program will commence in April with a team-building exercise, at which mentors and mentees can meet and mingle in a fun, informal environment. Mentors and mentees will meet four to six times over the course of 2011. The Program will conclude in November with a cocktail function at the offices of Mallesons at which all participants will receive a certificate to recognise their successful completion of the Program.
How do I apply?
Application forms can be found here and must be completed and received by Friday, 25 March 2011. Any applications received after this date will not be considered. All applications must be accompanied by an official academic transcript (the contents of all transcripts will remain strictly confidential).
Further information:
