Data retention scope creep

With our new mandatory data retention laws now in effect, the government is moving to expand their scope. A number of agencies have applied to be given warrant-less access to retained data (including the Victorian Racing Integrity Commissioner) and the government is pushing to get information from banking and financial services also included (see Delimiter's article).

As we move into next year - an election year - we'll be ramping up our campaign to roll-back the scope and duration of mandatory data retention and to extend the warrant requirement from journalists to the whole of society.

We'll need your help with this campaign. Below are two ways you can get involved and support us today.

We're getting local - come along

We're launching a series of chapters around the country and would love you to come along and get involved. These chapters will provide a forum for members and supporters to discuss issues, hear from some great speakers and to undertake fundraising and campaigning activities.

Launch Events

  • Perth - launched on 18th November
  • Melbourne - launching 25th November
  • Canberra - launching 1st December - featuring Crikey's political editor Bernard Keane
  • Sydney - launching 2nd December - featuring freelance journalist Claire Connelly
  • Brisbane - launching 15th December - featuring Griffith MP Terri Butler
  • Adelaide - launching early December

More details about all these events at our Chapters Page

Help us hire a Communications Intern

To run an effective campaign we're going to need a Communications Intern to support our communications and media relations.

We've already received over 30% of the funding we need. Once we get to 60%, we can start the hiring process.

Your donation of just $7.50 per week will help us to make this opportunity a reality.
