 Snoring & Sleep
Apnea
Snoring is caused
by air trying to get through a narrowed air
passage in your throat while sleeping. Snoring on
it's own is not harmful but if it a symptom of OSA
it could be deadly. OSA or
Obstructive Sleep Apnea has been getting more
press. Obstructive sleep apnea is when you
stop breathing for a period of time while sleeping
because something is blocking the
airway.
The following may increase your
risk for OSA.
A soft palate that is
elongated Large
tonsils and adenoids in
children
Large neck 17+"
-men & 16
-women)
Large tongue,
which may fall back and block the
airway
Retruded or small
chin
If untreated, your are at
greater risk from a motor vehicle accident
from falling asleep while driving, high blood
pressure and even stroke.
There are
treatments ranging from dental appliances to
wearing a CPAP mask while sleeping to treat
the condition successfully.

April is Stress
Awareness Month!
According to recent surveys, 33% of Americans are
living with extreme stress. Whether it be
from the ecomomy, losing a job or the housing
crisis it is important to reign it under
control. The increase use of stimulant
containing drinks, such as Red Bull, 5-hour
Instant Energy and
even coffee, don't help the
situation.
Stress is your body's reaction
to anything that disrupts your normal
routine. In small doses, its ok, but large
doses are harmful to your body.
Some
symptoms include, jaw clenching and
grinding. Grinding or bruxism can be
temporary and cause headaches and a poor night's
sleep or can cause lasting effects. Loss of
appetite, over-eating, upset stomach, memory
problems and irritability are also common
symptoms.
Chronic stress can lead to
obesity, immune system weakening, anxiety,
depression, increase in blood pressure,
cholesterol and heart rate which can progress
to heart disease and stroke.
The
best way to combat stress is to learn how you
body reacts to stress and recognize the
signs. Then find the source of the stress
and try to get it under control. Eating
healthy foods, eliminating bad habits like
smoking and drinking, exercising,
getting a good nights sleep and finding a
relaxing hobby are all great ways to eliminate
excess stress. Feel free to talk to friends
and family about your stress and how they have
handled theirs. If you need further help
a trained practioner may help you
further.
Most importantly if
you have a night guard, please wear
it. If you don't talk to Dr. Widen about the
benefits of wearing one. It will protect
your teeth and help lessen the effects of
grinding.

 Dentistry
in the News! What we
have
found that may benefit
you!
Stop Wining?
Ever wondered which wine
stains the most? It is apparent that red
wine stains teeth immediately, but white wine
allows teeth to stain later
on.
The red pigments visibly
stain teeth on contact but the white wine is more
acidic and actually etches the teeth and creates
small pores which will stain later. So you
must be careful not to follow white wine with any
dark liquids or smoking. The pigments will
inhabit the pores and will cause
staining.
It is
also imperative that you do not brush your teeth
immediately after drinking white wine or any
acidic beverage, because you wear down the
weakened enamel quicker. Allow time for your
saliva to neutralize the acid and strengthen the
enamel.
If you are
unhappy with the color of your teeth please call
us at 312-266-0044 to discuss your options.
No More Unsightly
