5 Tips on how to get rugby ready
Brian Armstrong, Viking's Men's Coach
-
Develop an Aerobic Base: This can be done through long runs at a moderate pace. This increases your aerobic capacity (also known as, 'endurance') which, for rugby will help you recover faster during whistles. It will also aid in recovery for your next phase of training...the anaerobic phase.
-
Improve Your Anaerobic Capacity: This can be accomplished through exercise that includes bursts of maximum effort alternated with low level recovery exercise. The simplest example would be wind-sprints. The high-level activity improves your anaerobic capacity allowing you to work harder during the game. Rugby is an anaerobic sport!
-
Core Training: In the gym, training from the chest to the knees is vital for all athletes. especially rugby players. A powerful core is vital in all contact sports and will help in scrummaging and all contact situations. Bench press, squats, deadlifts, cleans, and a variety of static and dynamic abdominal work can be included in your workouts. Sorry guys, arms are for the beach.
-
Nutrition: Eating properly if you are training hard is more important than the training itself. Senior players: Remember that alcohol is for after the match, not the night before.
-
Rugby IQ: Mental training is often forgotten in many sports. Acquire a better understanding of the laws of rugby and watch some games, if you can. A higher rugby IQ always results in an improved performance. Click here to review IRB Laws.

Get your Fundraising Cards!
The Vikings 2011 fundraising program involves minimal effort from every member in the club! The Vikings are selling coupon cards that can be used at local companies in the Durham Region and offers over $250 in savings. Every playing member will be asked and required to buy/sell 5 tickets at $10 each. This is only $50 worth of sales each that will generate over $10,000 in much need funds for the club.
Fundraising and Sponsorship is extremely important to enhance our programs and it also provides the resources to keep our fees for registration as minimal as possible. Get your cards!!!
