August 2011 Update from Ready for Change

 Ready for Change

helping smart people to live from their hearts

Ready for Change Update | August 2011

Here's what you can do in the next few minutes:

Coach's Corner: Ponder impermanence

I've been tired lately. Nap-two-hours-a-day, see-a-naturopath, obsessively-google-anemia, think-about-eating-red-meat, cry-with-exhaustion tired.

I'm telling you this because it's teaching me about permanence, impermanence, and how my brain messes with me.

Have you ever been in a situation that you just made worse because you treated it as if it were permanent?

That's what I've been doing. It leads to some good ol' catastrophic, fatalistic thinking:

"I'll never have energy ever again."
"I'll get so tired that I won't be able to serve my clients."
"I'll have to give up my business."
"I'll stop being nice to my husband because I'm too tired."
"I'll never have the capacity to care for another person because I am too tired."

Sooner or later this leads to something along the lines of: "I will die old and alone and poor."

All because I'm tired! And because I'm caught in the mindset of "I'm so tired, and it will always be this way."

Now, tell me, did this ring a bell for you? Do you ever catch yourself in fatalistic thinking, brought on because you think the situation you're in is never going to change?

Perhaps for you it looks different: "I will always be lonely," or "I'll never please my family," or "I'll always be insecure."

The lesson in this month's Coach's Corner is to notice when you've bought into permanence. Notice when your mental storyline is telling you that whatever situation you're in, it's not going to change. Notice what it does to you when you buy into the storyline and let it run wild.

What does it mean to let go of the storyline, and to sink into the knowing that "this too shall pass"?

What energy could you free up if you accepted that however things are, they will change?

Drop me a line for a free session - 20 minute coaching samples August 21st and 24th

At the beginning of 2011, I asked myself what I wanted to accomplish this year, and one of my answers was "coach my ass off". I want as many folks as possible to tap into how amazing their growth and learning can be when they have the support of a coach. If you've never tried coaching, if you're not sure if it's for you, and if you're curious, why not join me for a free, no obligation sample session? All day on Sunday August 21st and Wednesday August 24th, I'm inviting folks to set up appointments to pick a topic, grab 20 minutes, and see where coaching can get us. Drop me a line to claim your spot (and, of course, feel free to forward this opportunity to a friend!).

Schedule an Enneagram session - explore a psychological-spiritual growth tool that works

I'm using the Enneagram personality system more and more in my coaching practice. I've found it immensely helpful in my own personal development to know my own Enneagram type, my tendencies, and the opportunities my type can explore in order to grow spiritually and psychologically. If you're interested in seeing how your Enneagram type has bearing on a situation you're facing in your life right now, I'd be happy to set up a call to go over your type and chat about how it's showing up.

Skim the lowdown on what I've been up to
  • A number of people wrote to say they appreciated the Coaching Tip of the Week about working with resistance.
  • I've made two trips to Toronto this summer to run workshops with some of the great volunteers at Engineers Without Borders (EWB) -- I especially liked the experience of running a workshop on coaching with a small group of six participants, where everyone got a chance to coach and be coached.
  • Here in Ottawa, I dropped by the Ottawa city chapter of EWB to run a team-building workshop on how to give and receive feedback. They gave me a pound of fair trade coffee from Bridgehead as a thanks!
  • I'm keeping my eyes open for an office space in Ottawa where I can meet with clients in person. I'm holding out for something that feels like a light-filled, airy, plant-rich sanctuary, a place where my clients and I can more easily connect with our hearts.

What energy could you free up if you accepted that however things are, they will change?

Warmly,
Laura
