Storm Prep

This time every year I usually put together an article on how to prepare your boat for a tropical storm or hurricane.  We have all been watching Hurricane Irene close this week and many of us have been done some preliminary steps for preparation; fortunately it appears our coast will most likely be spared at this point in time.  Regardless I wanted to go ahead and get the usual prep ideas out and was hoping to be able to add some additional ideas to this year’s article.  As I searched for information I came across this 12-page guide published by Boat US magazine back in 2006.  Even though this guide is over 6-years old none of the prep methods have really changed.  Rather than pulling bits and pieces from the guide I figured it may be best to simply provide the link directly so that our readers could read the guide in its entirety and perhaps print it off to keep handy each summer.  Hopefully we will have an un eventful summer but if things do begin to look bad this guide should help you protect your prized asset: http://www.boatus.com/hurricanes/assets/pdf/swhurr_prep_guide.pdf

Council Postpones Public Hearings in Florida due to Hurricane Threat
Hearings rescheduled for November regarding red grouper management measures

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council has postponed two public hearings scheduled in Florida later this week as part of a series of hearings regarding management measures for red grouper.  Hearings scheduled in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 and Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday, August 25, 2011 will not be held due to the possible impacts of Hurricane Irene to the Atlantic coast.

The hearings on Amendment 24 to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan have been rescheduled as part of a series of public hearings that will be held in November 2011.  Public hearings will be held in Florida on the following dates: Jacksonville on November 15th; Cape Canaveral on November 16th,  and Key Largo on November 17th.   Details regarding the locations for the public hearings will be provided as they become available.

The amendment would implement a rebuilding plan for red grouper in the South Atlantic as required by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act for species determined to be overfished and undergoing overfishing.  The intent of the rebuilding plan is to end overfishing immediately and increase biomass of the overfished stock to a sustainable level within a specified period of time.  The amendment would specify management parameters, Annual Catch Limits (in pounds), Accountability Measures (should the catch limits be exceeded), and allocations for both recreational and commercial sectors of the red grouper fishery.

A public hearing on Amendment 24 was conducted last night in Wilmington, North Carolina and the hearing scheduled from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. today in Charleston, South Carolina will still be held.  The Council is currently accepting written comments on Amendment 24 until September 1, 2011.  Copies of the public hearing documents are available from the Council’s website at www.safmc.net.   Details on how to submit public comment are available from the website or by contacting the Council office at 843/571-4366 or toll free 866/SAFMC-10.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, one of eight regional councils, conserves and manages fish stocks from three to 200 miles offshore of
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida.

The Final Word
We have some great conditions to get on the water here over the last week.  I visited the weigh in on Saturday for the Allison Oswald final tournament and it looks like there was some real good action out there.  The creeks are full of your choice of live bait and the Flounder bite is the best I have seen in many years.  There is also been some great action on the Reds from wading the grass, to hitting the docks, to the deep holes and surf the Reds are everywhere right now.  The Sheepshead bite remains great at the jetties and around other structure in the harbor and the Spanish are still schooling up good in the inlets.  Tarpon action remains good on live bait in the inlets and shallow slews behind the breakers and the Spades, while somewhat finicky from time to time, are still on the nearshore reefs.

Offshore there continues to be some great reports.  There were some nice kings weighed in last weekend with less than 1 pound difference between 1 and 3rd!  The billfish and the dolphin bite remains good.  As water temperature cools some over the next several weeks the Cuda should thin out some and the other pelagics will move back through.  Some great offshore action takes place here in September and with satellite radio you can listen to your favorite game and catch fish at the same time.
!Get out there and get on them!
