State of the Farm

Staff, volunteers and the farm took a much deserved rest for a couple of weeks over the Holiday break. We've crossed into 2012, with seeds purchased and a plan to grow a lot of food and improve the farm over the next year. The upcoming work is exciting and endless, and we know that a lot of you are ready to join us out here this coming Saturday. In a week or so, we'll begin propagating tomatoes and eggplants under lights, as well as other spring crops. The lack of rain is a bit alarming, even though some years the rain doesn't really show up until February. We would welcome another wet spring, but at this point I'm anticipating that its gonna be a warm, dry year, which means we'll have an early planting of summer vegetables in early March, and an early harvest.

Are you interested in stepping up your involvement at Veggielution? Come learn the ropes on how to work all the different aspects of the farm. We will have two part classes the first part of the class will include a lecture about the subject matter of the day, often this information will be presented by community experts in the given field. The next part of the class is expereiential. We go out into the field and take part in learning the tactial skills behind our new knowledge. The subject matter includes a range areas such as; botany, natural pest control, composting, micro organisms, soil, & sustainable agriculture. This amazing, and may I mention FREE workshop series will give you the knowledge and skills to lead groups of volunteers during Veggielution workdays and to have more expertise in your own garden. Participants will be expected to join our Workday Leader Crew, and help to lead at least 2 workdays per month.

Letter from the Executive Director

Phew, 2011 was quite a year! 23,000 lbs of food, 8,800 volunteer hours from 1,500 volunteers, 270 Family Day participants, 140 workshop participants, 47 Cooking Matters Graduates, 27 Dig Crew Youth, 2 school gardens built, 1 Farm Box pilot program, and the list goes on. You know what? We kicked some serious veggie butt. And we have a seriously awesome community of people that made this all happen. 3 cheers for all we have accomplished, and all we will continue to do in 2012!

Come and learn how to transform your waste into built structures; specifically benches made of plastic bottles and cob. Stories from the Ground
Growing School Gardens
One of the greatest advantages of our California climate is that we can grow vegetables year round. And this winter our record breaking dry and warm December has kept our winter vegetable crops growing steadily. Leading up to the holidays, with a surge in volunteer support, we busily potted up young seedlings in the greenhouse, turned compost piles, finished constructing greenhouse tables, and added large amounts of nutrient rich compost to our fields.

Volunteer Appreciation Lunch

You're all invited to our Winter Volunteer Appreciation Lunch! It will be held at the community Meeting Hall, near the main entrance to Emma Prusch park. We want to acknowledge all of the hard work you veggielutionaries do for the farm, even if you are a new or one time volunteer.
Join us in celebrerating all of you with a great lunch, fun, and some relaxed hang out time with your fellow volunteers and community members. Come out for the workday and stay for the celebration!

Volunteer of the Month: Julie Mount
Julie Mount first came to Veggielution with friends volunteering through Our City Forest. Years later, Julie is still here and continues to volunteer. She works as the graphic designer for the Santa Clara Library system but loves getting her hands dirty. “I started volunteering because I was suffering from a dirt deficit,” Julie told us. “Where I live, I don't really have a place to garden. I love where I work, but sometimes have nothing concrete to point to at the end of the day. I volunteer so I can point to rows of veggies and say, ‘I had a hand in that.’” The reward of hands on labor and hard work has kept her coming, and her contributions are much appreciated. At Veggielution, “I found more than dirt,” she said. “I found an amazing community of people committed to their neighbors and the land.”
