Farm Box program lauches next Tuesday July 12th

We are proud to announce our very first Farm Box program, which will start this summer. This is your chance to buy produce directly from our farm using the "Community Supported Agriculture" model in which you partner with us to purchase a share of our summer harvest. Individuals or families can subscribe to the Farm Box program from July 12, 2011 to November 1, 2011 for 17 weeks for either a Sponsor Share or Family Share. Each week, participants will pick up a large box with a variety of vegetables that are currently available on the farm. With a Sponsor Share, individuals or families pay for 17 weeks at $30 per week for produce enough for a family of 4 for 1 week. We only have 3 more Sponsor Shares and a handful of Family Shares, so sign up today! Our Sponsor Shares support our Family Shares program, which is reserved for 20 families that live in the 95116 or 95112 zip code, or are enrolled in the Cal-Fresh (Food Stamp) program. Each Family share costs $15 a week, and subscribers must meet eligibility requirements. Click here to learn more and sign up.
State of the Farm
In two weeks, our main summer harvest will be blossoming and just in time for our new Farm Box program to begin. The Dig Crew youth and youth leaders are doing excellent work and learning a lot. We have a great crew of college interns and a reliable group of volunteers and Mayfair neighborhood families. The more help the merrier, please join us for our workdays and harvest days! Cooking Matters

We had a successful Cooking Matters class with 16 graduates. We cooked delicious recipes using seasonal vegetables from the farm like carrots, kale and lettuce. Also, we included some grains like quinoa, chia and amaranth. As a result, we created easy meals to share with those we love. Now, we are getting ready for our Summer Class that starts July 19th until August 23th. During the six weeks participants are going to learn new recipes using the Summer's bounty from the farm.
Thank you to all participants, volunteers and sponsors for their collaboration and time in order to make this class possible.
"The class have benefited me greatly because I have improved my eating habits. Now my family eats healthy and I have learned to buy healthy by reading food labels."

Volunteer of the Month:Eddy Udtoahan

Eddy has quickly become our resident "go-to" construction guy. He discovered the farm at Sacred Heart's, FoodFest back in May and has since volunteered countless hours of his time. Eddy came to the U.S. from the Philippines in 1989. His mother brought him to California seeking a better quality of life. And now, he is kindly improving the quality of work at the farm. Currently, Eddy is helping us in the construction of our new outdoor education kitchen. He is skilled in home remodeling, room additions, electric and plumbing. If you are in need of a handyman, Eddy fits the bill.
Contact Eddy Udtoahan at (408) 770-6518.
Thank you Eddy, for helping build up Veggielution!

Veggie of the Month: Summer Squash
Although August 8th is officially "Sneak Some Zucchini on to your Neighbor's Porch Day", we haven't had time this summer to become that desperate. Summer squash, zucchini, pattypan and crookneck, are notoriously prolific, and during the summer we have to harvest them everday. Summer squash are the same species as the winter squash like butternut and acron, but these varieties are bred for tenderness and flavor when they're still immature.
