Lakeshore Mac E-Letter

Just the Basics

Did you just get that new Mac, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch during the Holidays? Even if you didn't, this E-letter is filled with basic information to help you get the most out of your Apple Product. So keep reading, you might even learn something :)

iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad: If you have a Mac or PC , you can sync your new iDevice so that your mail accounts, addresses, calenders, and music are the same across all your devices and your computer. However; it is no longer a necessity. You can purchase a new iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and never sync it with a computer. All you need is your Apple ID and you're good to go. Activating iCloud is also a way to get everything on all your devices. If you decide to physically sync your iDevice with your computer, you only need to do this once. Plug it in and iTunes will launch. Then, under the Summary tab, click on Sync with this iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch over Wi-Fi. Then your iDevice will sync when you charge it as long as your computer is on. No wires needed :)

Manuals: Did you know that a manual use to be included with every computer or printer you bought? Those days are long gone. However; did you know that there is a manual that you can get for absolutely free on your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone? First you need to download iBooks. Click on the App Store on your iDevice, click on Search at the bottom and then type iBooks. Click on it to install. Next, launch iBooks. You will need to enter your Apple ID to make purchases, even free ones. Click on Browse at the bottom with the glasses. Then click on Top Free. Once there, click on the "I" on the right hand side and find Apple Inc. and click on it. Here you will find the free iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad User Guides. Download the one you want.

If you need a manual for your Mac, it's built right in! The Help Menu in the Menu Bar at the top of your Mac is always willing and waiting for you when ever you need help! It always changes to fit what ever program you are using. Don't ever forget that it is there. If you want more, I have found the Missing Manual Series to be the best. Just type Missing Manual in the Search filed of your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone while in iBooks and you can download them right onto your iDevice. If you want a hard copy, Amazon.com is the best place to go. Just type Missing Manual in the search field on Amazon.com and you will find them. Don't ever forget Google.com either. When in doubt, Google it!

I found a great little 99¢ App in the Mac App Store called "Learn Fast for Lion." It's a great little visual learning tool you can use right on your Mac to help you get started with Lion. Get it here in the Mac App Store.

If you want to find out more about your Mac, iPad iPhone, or iPod Touch, come to the South West Michigan Mac Users Group meeting on February 7th at the South Haven Memorial Library. I also have a special running right now. Five lessons for the price of four. I hope to set up iPad training through Community Education at Lake Michigan Collage in the near future.
