Connect on the go!

"I find it really easy to work from anywhere with my Android phone with mobile tethering that allows me to hook up my laptop to the internet wherever I go."

Take a break from working at home!

"If you want complete control over your home entertainment system with one simple remote control, look no further than Logitech's Harmony One. The Harmony One is a high-quality unit that will replace all of your infrared remotes. Note that you may need some time to set up with fancy remote - you have to connect it to your Mac or PC and answer a number of questions about your system, including exactly what equipment you are using. Once you properly set up this remote, just tell it you want to watch TV by using the touchscreen and it will turn on your audio equipment, satellite or cable box, and television... voila! No more fumbling for ten different remotes. This unit is rechargeable, so you don't have to worry about purchasing AA batteries, but note that heavy use of the remote will drain its battery quickly. Also note that this remote is pricey, but it is the gold standard for universal remotes and will make your life easier. I give this remote 4 out of 5 stars!"

Mobile Productivity: The Laptop Reigns Supreme
Some serious work-related tasks simply can't be done on a smart phone, tablet, or even a small laptop/netbook. Depending on the task at hand, using your finger as a pointing device can be inefficient and cumbersome. I often have customers ask me if they can replace their laptop with an iPad, and the answer is almost always "no". Tablets and smart phones give us a way to work on some things while on the go, but editing Word or Excel documents is a real hassle on small screens with no mouse. Smart phones (particularly the iPhone or Android phones) are great devices for email, managing calendars and contacts, light web browsing, texting, and GPS navigation. In a bind, a person could use an app such as LogMeIn Ignition to control their office or home computer while on the go, but the small screen size makes it difficult to get any real work done. The best tablet out there is Apple's iPad. With a bigger screen (almost 10") and 1024x768 resolution, the iPad is far better for working on emails, browsing the web, and doing about the same tasks you'd do on your iPhone or Android device. The iPad is easy to use, reliable, and highly portable. However, even with it's larger screen size, the iPad does not do well as a document editor. Using a bluetooth keyboard with the iPad is supported, but only in certain applications, and I find the combination of a physical keyboard and no mouse is hard to get used to. Use the iPad as an entertainment device first, and as a work tool second, and your overall experience will be much better.
