Spotlight on CGAP at Strathclyde
Congratulations to the Director of CGAP's programme in Strathclyde, Eleanor Shaw, who is now Chair of Marketing with Strathclyde Business School, and to Jillian Gordon who was awarded her doctorate on 14th November.
Welcome to their new PhD student Martin Gannon who recently joined the team. The draft title for his doctoral thesis topic is 'Critically analysing the influenced and dynamics of philanthropic family foundations and understanding the motivations of key decision makers within these groups.'

Research by Spoke 1 in Strathclyde focuses on the history and emergence of entrepreneurial philanthropy, taking an international perspective, and exploring its challenges and appeal for new generations of philanthropists.

New research

Panel members Sir Tom Hunter and Trevor Pears

This year’s report updates league tables of the largest UK family foundations measured by annual charitable spending, and sets out compelling case examples of the influences, motivations and strategies of large and small family foundations, based on interviews with philanthropists and funders.
The report, launch photos and press coverage are available from the CGAP website

New working paper
New working paper by Ian Mocroft analyses government spending on the voluntary sector for the years 2004-05 to 2008-09. The paper's findings suggest that the voluntary sectors in Wales, Scotland and N Ireland are comparatively well-funded by government compared with the UK average, and would be particularly vulnerable to any cuts in government expenditure.

CGAP at ARNOVA
CGAP researchers presented a number of papers at the 40th Annual Conference of the Association for Research on Nonprofit and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) in Toronto, Canada. These included ‘Community Foundations as Community Leaders? Comparing developments in Canada and the United Kingdom’ by Susan Phillips, Tobias Jung and Jenny Harrow which provided some early insights into their ongoing comparative work on community foundations in the two countries, and Beth Breeze’s ‘How donors choose charities’.
Tobias Jung, Susan Phillips and Jenny Harrow also hosted a well-received colloquium based on the ongoing preparation of a forthcoming Companion to Philanthropy which they are compiling and editing, to be published by Routledge. The colloquium brought together contributing authors and conference participants for an international discussion on key topics, emerging themes and trajectories, as well as opportunities and challenges for philanthropy. ESRC Festival of Social Science
As part of this year’s ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, Tobias Jung and Jenny Harrow organised a roundtable discussion on ‘Co-producing research: working together or falling apart?’ at Cass Business School on 2nd November. The session brought together representatives from academia and the third sector to consider the practical, methodological and ethical issues of joint academic-voluntary sector research. Jan Fishwick (PACT - Parents and Children Together), Jim Clifford (Baker Tilly), Jeanie Scott (Arts & Business Scotland) and Cathy Pharoah (CGAP) provided a background for the discussion by talking about their own experiences of research co-production. In the following discussion, key themes that were addressed included the mutual benefits of a co-production approach, the question of who sets and shapes the research question(s), the handling of sensitive results and the challenges of competing agendas and interference. A report summarising the presentations and discussions will be published by CGAP in January, and available to download from the CGAP website.
