GovCampNSW Update
Hi Allison

This countdown bulletin is sent to GovCampNSW participants as well as those who have subscribed for updates or have been nominated to receive more information.

The organising team will be sending around one update per week to keep you informed with news as well as practical things to consider the week before. If you wish to unsubscribe please see the option at the bottom of this page.

NSW is listening

There’s an enthusiasm for discussion on public innovation.  GovCampNSW enjoys the formal endorsement of the “NSW champion for open government” Deirdre O’Donnell, Information Commissioner.  She will be participating at GovCamp for the full day and is keen to hear people’s thoughts and priorities.

This week, we also received a message of support from Chris Eccles, Director-General of the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.  As effectively the most senior public servant in the state, it was encouraging to have him say:

“The public sector cannot hold all the answers and must look beyond itself in developing solutions to public issues. GovCampNSW is excellently placed to bring together those who can assist in searching out those solutions.” (Visit www.govcampnsw.info for more of “what people are saying”).

NSW is listening.  So get your thinking caps on.  What will YOU want to have discussed on 19 November?  Check back in to the GovCamp site and tell us at http://govcampnsw.info/2011/10/discuss/

GovCampNSW 75% subscribed

BarometerAs one wit on the GovCamp team said this week: “There’s now a very real risk of this being a success!”.  With two weeks still to go, the registrations are pouring in and GovCampNSW is three-quarters booked!

The organisers opted to allocate spaces for government and non-government participants, and it’s interesting that the ratio of more government attendees is on track.  We also opted to reserve only a limited registration capacity for morning only attendees -because GovCamp is really a full day experience if you want it to produce results.  It’s clear already that NSW is mentally rolling up its sleeves in preparation to have this conversation.

See you all on the day!

Dom Campbell

A view from London and Washington DC

Because it’s a day for dialogue between the participants, there will only be a few presentations and they’ll be brief.  But powerful.  And inspiring.  We’re pleased that GovCampNSW will have the benefit of insights from the UK and the US through Dominic Campbell, founder of FutureGov.

Dominic is all too familiar to camps in London – he and his team organised CityCampLondon, a 3-day thought-fest and hack challenge last year.  He will also bring a practical perspective on the real-world impacts of 2.0 for central agencies and local government.  In a Skype chat earlier this week, Dominic reminded us that, while he’s excited to present, he is even more looking forward to joining in the break-out discussions to hear what is happening here.

NICTA

The NICTA eGovernment Cluster

We’re grateful to the folks at National ICT Australia (NICTA) for providing the venue for this first NSW GovCamp.  It’s a great space at their Lab at Australian Technology Park.  And there is so much to discover about NICTA! The organisation is a powerful alliance itself, with a footprint across several Australian cities and they are partners on an amazing range of exciting and innovative projects.  Visit: www.nicta.com.au or their open software portal at www.openNICTA.com

Not enough people know that they also host the NICTA e-Government Cluster, a forum for connecting the e-gov community, stimulating opportunities as well as promoting innovation and productivity.  This is a national cluster drawing participants from government, industry and the research community, and they are actively seeking membership. Social narration

Social narration: The stories we all can tell

We’re blown away!  So many registrants have opted for information on social reporting that we’re planning a special mini-masterclass in the week before GovCamp.

Social reporting is about using the tools of social media – Twitter, blogging, digital video & cameras, and more – to not only capture the spirit and substance of the discussion, but to actively report it “live” so that people outside the GovCamp can take part remotely.  Good social reporting also enables a higher quality of elicited knowledge and learning that may be passed on from the day.  So whether you’re a guru or newbie, let’s share what we know.

Stay tuned.  We’ll first email some more background info direct to those interested.  From there, we’ll arrange a 2-hour briefing to suit most and start creating the social narration squad for our first GovCamp.  Just massive.
