Sustainable House Day - This Sunday 11th of Sept, 10am-4pm!
Free Entry to Sustainable Houses
Find out how to make your home more environmentally sustainable on Sustainable House Day this Sunday!!
2011 marks the 10th anniversary of Sustainable House Day and once again local Darwin, Palmerston and rural home owners are opening their doors to the public. Sustainable House Day is a free national event and is a symbol of the growing consciousness about saving power and water, reducing waste and conserving resources.
The dramatic increased interest in the environmental, health and financial benefits of living a more sustainable life was evident in last year's event when up to 2000 people public visited opened homes around the city, suburbs and rural areas.
This year's open houses and apartments are -
6 Grevillea Circuit, Nightcliff - an old apartment block that features an energy and water efficient unit and a communal garden for all residents to pick food from. Come and learn what you can do in your small apartment/unit as well!
16 Varney Crescent, Jingili - This home produces solar power (around 50% of the home's needs), has an energy efficient interior and a water wise garden. Water and energy consumption has dropped dramatically since the new owner has created this native-garden paradise and made improved energy efficiency on the inside!
7 Songlark Street, Bakewell - There is no air conditioning used at this home, yet the inside temperature is significantly cooler than the outside. Come and learn how to make your home 'cool' too!
180 Gulnare Road, Bees Creek - This owner-built home is utilizing recycled materials and is a eco-friendly design. There is also a waste water treatment system, permaculture designed yard and lots of other creative ideas for minimising energy and water use
Lot 7 Solar Village Humpty Doo - This interesting design is eco-friendly and is self sufficient for power and water use. The best part is, the house cools the occupants, not the other way round! You can also meet the author of our new book COOLmob's Design for the Tropics between 1pm - 4pm at the Solar Village and hit him up with any questions on home energy use under the sun!
This is a fantastic experience for members of the public to see just how easy it is to live more sustainably and talk first hand with homeowners who have 'been there, done that'. Join us this Sunday from 10.00am - 4.00pm and visit our website COOLmob for maps and directions
