Imagine you’re Paul the Apostle. It’s the first century and you’re in Athens, waiting for your mission partners to arrive. You’ve got some time on your own to walk around the city and really look, really examine – who are these people? How do they think? What do they worship? How would I share the Gospel with them?
You used to persecute followers of Jesus until you were stopped in your tracks by Jesus himself and accepted that he really was the Messiah, and that his death and resurrection is the Gospel, the good news of a God who came to earth, to love, to redeem, to make people whole, to make all the wrong things right.
In Brussels, we need to ask the same questions: Who are these people? How do they think? What do they worship? How would we share the Gospel with them?
In Athens Paul saw statues, altars indicating worship. In Brussels we also have statues, we also have objects of worship. One statue in Brussels is a dancer, stretched towards the sky with every muscle, seemingly giving praise with the best of his gifts and passions to the God of heaven of earth. Another statue in Brussels is of a woman, also reaching for the sky, but with a euro symbol held high, as if it were to be praised. Our city is full of worshippers – but worshippers of which gods? We place what we worship in the center of our lives and, over time, we are formed in its image.
Come to The Well this weekend as we look into Acts 17 to consider what questions does the Gospel answer for people in our neighbourhood? What can we do together this week to share the Gospel?
