Greetings!!

I’m the Community Outreach Coordinator and I’m very happy to be working at ANDPVA with our talented and energetic staff and within and for the larger community of Indigenous artists across Canada.  For those of you who don’t know me, I am a musician and a composer/producer who has been a part of recordings and performances by bands such as Seventh Fire and Jacques and the Shakey Boys and other Native recording acts. I also produce and direct corporate videos and even do some acting gigs here and there.  Some of you may remember my voice from the early days of Aboriginal Voices Radio where I was the music director and on-air host during its early days in Toronto.  You may have met me backstage on numerous theatrical and choreographical productions in positions ranging from composer/sound designer to the box office.  After having done all of these things, I know how hard it is to actually create and sustain Art in a meaningful manner. In my position here at ANDPVA I, and the rest of our staff, really take the word ‘development’ seriously.  We are now offering low-cost guitar lessons on a weekly basis here at our office and our monthly RED Revue showcases a headlining artist and  also features an Open Arts Mic which artists of any discipline can use to present their work.  We are currently running a gallery showing of paintings by Travis Shilling at the Gladstone Hotel gallery here in Toronto (with more gallery showings to come!) and we host the weekly Indigenous Arts Market which is open on Saturday mornings for our members to sell their art works.  We’ve also had youth initiatives such as Leadership Training and (in conjunction with LIFT/Female Eye Film Festival) a workshop on super-8 film production designed for young women. I am your "go-to-guy" for Video Production Gear Rentals.  We have a very good pro-sumer video camera, the Canon XL2, as well as a Lowel lighting kit, a Manfrotto fluid head tripod AND a Sennheiser shotgun mic and other audio goodies.  We want you, our membership, to use this equipment!!

Produce a viral video, shoot a documentary, direct an indie feature film, make a music video for your band, or how about an archival video of your choreography or theatrical productions??  That’s what this gear is for!! Please contact me to learn about our discounted rental rates.

I’d like to invite our Aboriginal artists to drop by our office and say hello to our hard working staff and have a coffee and a chat.
We want to hear YOUR ideas:  What can an indigenous arts association do for you?

I’m listening!!

SHIFT: dialogues of migration in contemporary art

A three-day creative symposium

April 8-10, 2011, Regina, SK
Organized by the Strandline Curatorial Collective and the MacKenzie Art Gallery

Location: MacKenzie Art Gallery
3475 Albert Street, Regina, Saskatchewan

www.shiftsymposium.ca

Feature Artist: Jayce Salloum
Keynote Speaker: Esther Shalev-Gerz
Keynote Performer: Eekwol

Day 1: Finding New Directions—Participatory Practices, Galleries and Groups
Day 2: Creating Common Ground—Cultural Translation, Trust and Language Crossings
Day 3:Positioning—Local and Global Narratives, Storytelling and Making Connections

SHIFT: dialogues of migration in contemporary art investigates creative responses by artists and galleries to the shifting geographies created by indigenous and non-indigenous movements of people and ideas.  Reflecting on current debates about mobility, migration, placements and displacements in contemporary art and institutions, this three-day event provides a platform to discuss progress and issues in this field.  Artists, curators, theorists, storytellers, musicians, educators, writers and the audience are invited to question and rethink the role of contemporary art in its transformative function.

While the first day draws on notable arts professionals and artists who have foregrounded and validated participation and engagement with diverse communities, the second day focuses on new artist practices with talks and performances on cultural translation.  The third day will be devoted to storytelling and narrative, mobility, connectivity and collaboration with communities.  Theories and best practices come hand-in-hand to provide a significant and radical overview of the subject.  Prior to and during the symposium, a series of events will also take place across the city, including artist talks, exhibition openings, art performances and film screenings.

On Friday April 8th, the symposium will begin with a feature presentation entitled subjective affinities: concretizing the ephemeral - a social convergence by Feature Artist Jayce Salloum (Vancouver).  On Saturday April 9th, Keynote Speaker Esther Shalev-Gerz (Paris) will present Trust and the Unfolding Dialogue, followed by a Keynote Performance Revitalizing and Redesigning the Word Warrior's Weapons by Cree hip hop emcee Eekwol (Saskatoon).

Featuring presentations and performances by: Brendan Fernandes, (Artist, New York); Janna Graham (Projects Curator at the Serpentine Gallery, London, UK); 2Fik  (Artist, Montreal); Syrus Marcus Ware (Program Coordinator, Teens Behind the Scenes program, AGO, Toronto); Terrance Houle (Artist, Calgary); Cheryl L’Hirondelle (Artist, Toronto); Peter Morin (Artist, Victoria); Rachelle Viader Knowles (Artist, Regina); and Shelly Bahl (Artist, founding member of SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) and ZEN-MIX 2000: Pan-Asian Visual Arts Network, New York); Judy Anderson (Artist, Regina); Deanna Bowen (Artist, Toronto); Barbara Meneley (Artist, Regina); Soheila Esfahani (Artist, Waterloo); Michelle LaVallee (Artist & Assistant Curator, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina); Neal McLeod (Art Historian and artist, Trent University, Peterborough); Srimoyee Mitra (Artist. Q: What programs are best for editing; music, video?

The industry Standard for music is protools. But For video you can use anything like; Windows Movie maker, Adobe Premier, or Adobe Flash Builder.
If you have a Mac: Protools and Premier would be your best bet as they are by far the more broadly utilized editing programs. Aswell as the easy and user friendly interface they present.
If you have a PC: Fleximusic might be another music editing program to inquire about as it is very similar to Pro-tools but wont put as much stress on your computer...and Premier is still your best choice in video editing. When newly entering editing it is best to sit down and take your time and get comfortable with all the options the program offers.

Premier is a smooth user freindly program designed by adobe to allow people to make home movies, but it is also a very user friendly interface and was therefore quickly accepted into the professional field. Pro-tools is the industry standard and is utilized in studios across the world.

Although there are other programs you can utilize for the simple fact of efficiency and user friendly interfaces i would recomend if you can use Pro-tools for your music and sound editing and Adobe Premier for your Video.

We expect that many art lovers, community and andpva members will be in attendance for this exciting event! Any donations received will be greatly appreciated. All artists who donate to this event will receive a charitable tax receipt and sent a personalized invitation to The Red Masquerade.

We support Indigenous artists/creators and producers that are working in any discipline through networking, promotion, workshops, training, and partnerships. We also work for increased access to the arts sector for artists through policy development and advocacy. The knowledge of Indigenous arts and artists are increased by our publications, arts resource library, Indigenous Arts Network online, and ongoing research.
