Hello ANDPVA members,

As we welcome and prepare for the arrival of Manoominike-Giizis (Rice Moon), we at ANDPVA are preparing to host/honor our dear members and supporters by holding a “potluck” feast at our annual AGM on September 27th from 6:30-9:30 pm.

Manoominike-giizis is the time of year when we gather as a community to look back at the previous year, in a mode of reflection, critique and celebration. We do this so we can renew our energies, colors and strengthen our vision to continue with a healthy heart, spirit and mind for the upcoming years.

When I look back at the previous year, I am filled with an increased sense of fondness for ANDPVA. I have witnessed her arms increase substantially in her capacity to hold and present opportunities for the Aboriginal community here in Toronto.

With the welcoming of our new Executive Director Wanda Nanibush, ANDPVA has increased substantially its breadth of activities through showcasing community talent locally, Nationally, and Internationally. With the help of David Deleary and Leslie McCue, we work towards a shared sense of purpose amongst our community of artists, as well as increase the prominence of ANDPVA as an arts advocacy organization. I give great thanks to Ms. Nanibush,  for the accumulated work done this far. I look forward to seeing your continued vision for ANDPVA unfold in the years to come.

Reflecting on the past years activities, I feel the fire of our collective spirits strengthen. We are so very grateful to our constituents for your continued support in these events as you willingly share your talents/colors and light with us. We become further re-vitalized through your shared artistic spirit.

Throughout the past year (since my term as President) ANDPVA has also worked towards decolonizing our corporate structure, in an effort to reassert our own Indigenous constitution. This specific area of focus began with the recognition that all good governance is created and maintained only through sustained dialogue with our constituents.  As an Indigenous arts organization we believe that the re-assertion of an Indigenous ideology, within our own governance structure will help us work within codes of respect, connectedness, collectiveness and inclusion.

Today we invite you to put your name forward as a possible candidate for our governing body so that you may further assist us in the above vision.

We welcome you to help us build the fire and share the light.

Tannis Nielsen
President,
ANDPVA

Ask Arty

Q: How much should I be selling my artwork for?

A: Great question! There is a few factors to consider when selling your artwork. First consider how much it cost you for your supplies and the amount of time you put into the piece.  Your materials and labour should be covered when pricing your work, then you can take a look at fair market value. Take a look at other artists work similar to your style and get a feel how much their pieces are going for.

We have found an article that will help with your decision to price your  work from www.emptyeasel.com

Good day! Please see the following message from Alexandra Charette, PLAY Intern, Aboriginal Initiatives, Right to Play Canada:

In June 2010, Right To Play initiated the Promoting Life-skills in Aboriginal Youth (PLAY) Program in partnership with Sandy Lake First Nation and Moose Cree First Nation. The PLAY Program aims to limit the challenges and build on the strengths of Aboriginal youth and their communities, while supporting the value of culture and identity. A key component of the program is the promotion of youth engagement through leadership activities, volunteer work and relationship building with other members of the community. The project thus far has engaged children, youth and their communities in the design, development, and implementation of the program, with the understanding that local ownership is a key component to creating a sustainable program.

Over the next year, the Youth Leadership component of PLAY program will expand to an additional 30 Ontario First Nations communities. This specific program helps youth build leadership skills, increase their self-esteem and confidence, and improve their ability to set goals and create plans for the future.

The workshops inspire and motivate youth to lead cultural and sporting events, build relationships with Elders and other community members, and plan activities to help address local social issues.

As a result of this vast expansion, we are hiring a total of 4 positions described below:

1) Program Manager: Reporting to the Deputy Director, Education and Aboriginal Affairs, the Program Manager will be responsible for the on-going supervision and support of 3 Program Officers, who supervise 30 Community Mentors in First Nation communities across Ontario. We will be hiring 1 program manager.

2) Program Officers: The Program Officer will be responsible for the on-going supervision and support of 10 Community Mentors facilitating the Youth Leadership Program in 10 First Nations Communities in Ontario. We will be hiring 3 program officers.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Julia Porter, the Deputy Director of Aboriginal Initiatives either through email (jporter@righttoplay.com) or telephone (416. 203. 0190 ext. 358).

Thank you very much!
