Exciting times at Why Science continue - from a successful launch of film screening & town hall meetings featuring Ease The Quiet Storm to a discussion with Governor Malloy about education reform in Connecticut. This newsletter is focused on my home state CT. CT has the worst achievement gap in the country and the fastest aging population, particularly in the sciences. This means that there are not enough students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics pipeline to fill jobs now and in the future. As a state we have some serious problems to address.

HAMDEN — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy apologized to Yvonne Akpalu because his proposed two-year budget doesn’t contain as much on education reform as he’d like writes Ann DeMatteo.
But responding to Akpalu’s question about reducing costs for remedial education at the college level and making high schools more accountable, Malloy said he believes every high school junior should be tested in reading, writing and math, and if they fail to meet standards, then their senior-year curriculum should be designed around the necessary remediations.
