Happy New Year!

And Now a Word from our President: Romona's Corner

Thank you for being part of EWGA Los Angeles!

Greetings LA Chapter!  It’s only January, and we already have an exciting year lined up.  We started off with a bang at Verdugo Hills last weekend.  Barbara, thank you for hosting our first event of the year. An event recap is included in this newsletter.
In this issue, we talk about some of our favorite benefits of membership – we want to make sure you’re taking advantage of everything EWGA has to offer.
Speaking of membership, please help me in welcoming our 2 newest members to our chapter:  Karen Preston and Linda Wirtzer!  We are so happy to have you join us, and all of us look forward to getting to know you.  Our next 5 events are posted at our website & you can sign up from there: http://www.ewgala.org/Home/

Our New Flexible Board Wants You!!!

Once again, we would like to thank for voting for our new Flexible Board Model.  We have current board members assuming the newly defined positions, except for one.  The Director of Operations is available, and we want you!
The Director of Operations manages relationships with chapter sponsors & partners, manages chapter elections, and ensures compliance with the use of our logo requirements. If you are interested in this role, please contact Romona Henderson at romonahenderson@roadrunner.com, or by calling 818-679-0029.   We would love to have you join us!

There are many great benefits to being a member of EWGA.  This month, we dedicate this issue to highlighting a few of our favorites...

EWGA Means: Having Great Golf Girlfriends

by Roberta Kantola
Nina Guttman, Roberta Kantola, Laura Perry and Barbara Trivison took advantage of a special at Moorpark Country Club this past Christmas week. For $199 for a foursome, we played on a beautiful course and were lucky enough to have awesome California weather.  So even though there was no EWGA golf in December, we got to play anyway!  Looking forward to many more outings with the EWGA LA gang!

EWGA Means: Instant Golf Network Away from Home

by Kathy Malmfeldt
One of the advantages of being an EWGA member is the opportunity to play with other chapters when you are traveling.  I have a second home in Palm Desert, so I joined EWGA Palm Springs/Desert Cities as my secondary chapter (only $25 more per year).  Many of their events are on dates that don't conflict with L.A., so I play with them when I can.  January 8th, they had a fantastic deal at The Marriott Shadow Ridge - only $75 - the rack rate is $180!  You don't have to belong to another chapter to play with them at the member rate.  If you're going to be in Northern California, for example, you can go to EWGA.com & check out which chapters have events near where you'll be, and contact their Events chair.  It's a great place to meet new EWGA friends & play new courses.  Remember, there are over 100 EWGA Chapters in the U.S., Canada & Europe.

EWGA Means: We plan golf events for you

Thanks to our events chair, Kathy Malmfeldt & her committee, we have some great Upcoming Events!  The next 5 events are on our Home Page, and ready for you to sign up.   http://www.ewgala.org/Home/
1.  Sat 1/21/12: San Dimas registration closed, but we have 2 open spots.  Email KathyMalmfeldt@aol.com if you’re interested!
2.  Palm Springs Weekend & Match Cup with Palm Springs chapter.  3/24 & 3/25. See our website "Announcements" section for more details!
Keep an eye out for more events in our Tues Tee Talk emails & on our website.

EWGA Means: Once a Member, Always a Member

Good news.  The reinstatement fee for former members to “rejoin” is gone!
We know that women have many reasons they need to take an occasional break from EWGA.
When former members are ready to rejoin EWGA – they just pay the regular renewal fee, no additional fees!
So, get in touch with your friends who are former members and let them know: when they are ready to get back on the course – EWGA is ready to welcome them back.

EWGA Means: Handicaps & Competition

by Carol Grosvenor, Handicap Chair
EWGA Los Angeles Chapter sponsors monthly golf play days where everyone plays for fun -- either a 9 hole event or an 18 hole event.  If you play your round of golf according to the USGA Rules of Golf, you can post your score to an electronic handicap system that will keep track of all the rounds of golf that you play.  The handicap system will determine your handicap index after you have posted 5 rounds of 18 holes or 10 rounds of 9 holes.  Your handicap index will be used to place you appropriately in any EWGA LA competitive events.

Competitive events for EWGA LA include the club championship, laddered match play tournaments, and events played competitively with other EWGA chapters.  A current and accurate handicap index is required if you want to participate (compete) in these events.

If you are a member of a Southern California Golf Association club and use the GHIN system at the golf courses to post your scores, please continue to post all EWGA LA golf events on the GHIN system.  If you are new to golf or already use the EWGA GN21 system, please use that system to post all of your golf scores.  Only use one system to record your scores and calculate a handicap index.  Both GHIN and GN21 will update your index on the 1st and 15th of the month.  Your index is verified by the Handicap chair and used by the tournament committee.

How to Obtain a USGA Handicap through EWGA’s GN21 Handicap System

EWGA Means: Great Golf in Jan at Verdugo

by Barbara Trivison
The Hills of Verdugo were alive with the sound of EWGA-LA members!  We started our first 9E event of the year by working out the holiday rust with a clinic on the range.  Then it was time to play the ups and downs of Verdugo: the challenging hills, the large fast greens followed by the small fast greens.  The weather was picture perfect and so were 3 players who had chip-in’s: Lynn Courville and Romona Henderson chipped in on hole 3 and Leslie Walstedt chipped in on hole 6.  Each winner took home a whopping $4.  The putting was tough with fast greens and some nasty pin placements.  We had 2 players with 33 putts: Janice Okanishi and Laura Morrison each received a Roger Dunn gift card.  Join us for the next event at Dominguez Hills. Hope to see you there!
