Are You Coming to the Christmas Party?

The Granite Falls Historical Society membership gathers to celebrate Christmas on Saturday, December 10, at the home of members Saras & Dean Steinke, 15208 96th NE, Granite Falls WA. (Map)  The fun begins at 2 p.m. The event is a potluck with dessert provided, so bring a main dish, side dish, salad, or other holiday food.

Contact Thora Boede at 360-691-2369 or etmisty@comcast.net to let us know you are coming, to ask questions, or to volunteer to help.

New Board Members Elected

New and returning board members were elected at the November 28 membership meeting. Returning to the Board are Ted Peddycord, Fred Cruger, Carolyn Tarpley, Gene Fulmer, Eldon Kirstein, and Vervia Gabriel. New to the Board are Ryan Foxley, manager of Littlefield Farm and a professional musician; Diane Boyd, a long-time resident of Silverton and USFS Ranger stationed at the Verlot Visitor's Center;  and Robin Ingraham, owner of Granite Falls Physical Therapy.

The new Board will operate under the by-law changes approved at the November 28 meeting. The provisions of the new by-laws are:

  • Board members serve a 3-year term.
  • Each Board member is limited to two consecutive terms.
  • A nominating committee, appointed by the Board from amongst all members, will propose at least least 3 candidates annually. Candidates may be nominated from inside or outside GFHS; any member may also nominate a candidate.
  • All Board candidates are presented at the October or November membership meeting prior to the elections.
  • All Board members must be or must become a GFHA member.
Each year at the Board meeting following elections, the Board will decide who will serve as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. This year only, all Board members will draw straws to determine who serves a one year, two year, or three year term. In November 2012, only three new Board members will be elected for full-three-year terms. This new structure will help ensure continuity on the Board each year.

Christmas Tree Lighting Enjoyed by All
The annual Christmas Tree Lighting was accompanied by dry weather and a crowd anxious to kick-off the holiday season.
Christmas music was provided by the Granite Falls High School Band. Costumed docents handed out hats and mittens to children in attendance, and a creative group of old and young competed in the holiday hats clap-off.
The collage shows some of the contestants and their creations. Dwight Fisk's tall, lighted Christmas Tree won "best in show."
